The root word, evolve, is defined in the Webster Dictionary as "something that develops gradually".  Evolution is further defined in Wikipedia as "descent with modification from preexisting species," "cumulative inherited change in a population of organisms through time leading to the appearance of new forms," and "the process by which new species or populations of living things develop from preexisting forms through successive generations."  Anything that evolves is going to take a long period of time!  Biological evolution is then "the change in the heritable characteristics of biological populations from one generation to the next".   These characteristics are passed on from the genes of the parents to the offspring during sexual reproduction.  These characteristics are the result of mutation, genetic recombination, and other kinds of genetic variation and are often due to a change in the environment that the species is living in.  These changes make the offspring better than the previous generation.
