As a little child, you were probably told about a Christmas character known as Santa Claus. A jolly old man, dressed in a red suit that delivers presents to all the good little boys and girls on Christmas Eve.  Although part of the tradition was to receive gifts or presents, the character was also used by parents to make their children behave.  If they were not good little boys and girls, then Santa Claus wouldn't bring them a gift for Christmas.  As we get older, we learn to realize that there is no such thing as Santa Claus.  How does Santa Claus then compare to Jesus?  When you were a young child, you were also probably told about a man named Jesus.  You were told that he was the son of a god and if you believed in him you would receive the gift of eternal life.  Both of these characters are thought to be supernatural beings that you either believe in or you don't believe in.  Santa Claus can do miraculous things and so did Jesus.  Both live in a special place.  Santa up in the North Pole somewhere and Jesus up in the sky somewhere in a place called heaven.  If you believe in Santa and you're a good boy or girl, you get a gift as your reward.  If you believe in Jesus and you're good, you get a gift as your reward.  Both even have their own special book!  Santa has a special book that he keeps track of who has been naughty or nice, and Jesus has a special book that keeps track of who believes in him and who does not.  As we get older, we eventually grow out of believing in Santa Claus.  You usually find out from an older sibling or the kids at school.  Yet, as we grow older, many people still believe in the supernatural character of Jesus because this belief is reenforced into adulthood.  Is it possible that they are both just mythical people?  Maybe there was a real historical Jesus.  If there was, he certainly wasn't the son of an almighty god in the sky, but a regular man who was a religious prophet or teacher that got himself crucified by the Romans.
