A tree of life is used as a model to demonstrate the various forms of life on our planet and describe the relationships among the different organisms.  These specimens can be living or extinct.  A tree of life is used to show at what point in history two specimens split apart from their last universal common ancestor.  A tree of life can show the classification of plants or animals and will usually include both classifications on one tree of life.
